Autistic Identity and Shame: You Were Always You

By NeuroHub Community NeuroHub Community 25 Oct 2026

You were always you.

Finding out you're Autistic can mean reprocessing your whole life: the things that happened to you, whether they were fair, and what you might have done differently had you known. We often pour so much energy into that reprocessing that we end up burnt out and in a dark place.

But who you are hasn't changed. You just understand yourself a little better now.

Building a positive Autistic identity isn't about becoming someone new. It's about coming to terms with who you've always been. You can admit that you experience disability, and that things have been harder than they should have been, without feeling ashamed of who you are. That's the foundation of Autistic pride.

Newly diagnosed or newly identified? You don't have to work it out alone. Find our community, courses and resources through the link in our channel bio.
